March is National Meals on Wheels Month

February 23, 2010

March For Meals is a national campaign during the month of March, initiated by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), which seeks to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of the local community. The slogan, “so no senior goes hungry”®, is the rallying cry of the campaign.

Senior Services of Albany joins MOWAA in this national effort to end senior hunger in America by 2020. We believe that this initiative to unite Meals on Wheels programs will improve the visibility of Senior Nutrition Programs nationwide.

This year Central Steak joins Senior Services of Albany in this effort. We encourage everyone to dine at  Central Steak from March 7th trough March 21st.  Mention Senior Services of Albany and a portion of your check will be donated to Senior Services of Albany’s Meals on Wheels program.   Please see below for details.

Mayors For Meals

In 2006, MOWAA introduced a new component of the March For Meals campaign called Mayors For Meals. On a designated day in March, mayors and local elected officials across the country deliver meals with their MOW program to seniors in their community. This year, Mayors For Meals will take place on March 21, 2012. The Hon. Gerry Jennings, Mayor of the City of Albany along with Daniel McCoy, Albany County Executive will be joining SSA’s Meals on Wheels staff delivering meals to homebound senior residents in Albany.

This year, Meals On Wheels programs across the country are also celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the inclusion of Senior Nutrition Programs in the Older Americans Act (OAA).  The OAA is the primary piece of federal legislation that authorizes and supports vital nutrition services, both congregate and Meals On Wheels, to Americans age 60 and older.
