Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Senior Services of Albany was selected as the 2006 Nonprofit Organization of the Year by The Tech Valley Nonprofit Business Council – a shared initiative of the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce and The Chamber of Schenectady County. The award recognizes excellence in ethical management, community collaboration and achieving effective service outcomes. Several other organizations and individuals were also recognized.

Senior Services was recognized before a crowd of approximately 300 businesspeople and community leaders at the Glen Sanders Mansion in Scotia. The major sponsor of the luncheon was Bank of America and video sponsor was Phillips Lytle LLP; Lydia Kulbida of WNYT/NewsChannel 13 served as emcee.

“On behalf of the Tech Valley Nonprofit Business Council, I would like to extend sincere congratulations to this outstanding group of organizations and individuals for their dedicated efforts to better our region,” said TVNBC Chair Jim Johans. “Their work performed on behalf of the nonprofit business community provides a positive impact on the region’s quality of life.”

“It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to recognize our honorees at this annual event highlighting the tremendous role nonprofits play in our community,” said Albany-Colonie Chamber President Lyn Taylor and Schenectady Chamber President Charles Steiner. “Nonprofit organizations are a vital economic force in Tech Valley and we are grateful for their service that improves the lives of all citizens in the region.”

SSA partners with MVP

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

Senior Services of Albany (SSA) recently entered into a unique partnership with MVP Gold to bring new health and wellness opportunities to Albany’s older adult community. MVP Health Care, a provider of health plans based in Schenectady that recently merged with Preferred Care in Rochester, has just introduced a new Medicare Advantage health plan called MVP Gold to the Capital District. MVP Gold is modeled on the very successful Preferred Care Gold, a plan that’s been the #1 rated Medicare plan nation-wide for two consecutive years.

Kristine Lindahl, Community Heath Educator with MVP Health Care, will be working with SSA staff to design and present Living Well programs from MVP Gold at the three SSA senior centers. “Our Living Well programs will be open to anyone,” Lindahl said, “I want everyone to come and experience the benefits of a program designed to help them take charge of their life, and affect their own wellness.” Living Well programs from MVP Gold will include classes, seminars, screenings and other special events.

The living Well concept was developed in response to market research conducted by Preferred Care in Rochester that showed that older adults were very interested in taking charge of their own well being so that they can remain active and independent. “Older adults want to proactively participate in their health, and be involved in improving their level of wellness,” said Lindahl, “and our Living Well programs stem from that research and interest,” she explained.

MVP and SSA are currently making plans to introduce programs early in 2007. Details and schedules will be available soon.

What is a NNORC?

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

A Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NNORC) is an interfaith partnership led by Jewish Family Services of NENY, that includes Senior Services of Albany, Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, United Jewish Federation of NENY, St. Peter’s Home Care and CHOICES program, Catholic Charities, Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Community Center, and University at Albany School of Social Welfare. NNORC’s allow adults to remain in their homes, and give them opportunities for social interaction and increased health and social services. With the Baby Boom generation moving into the 60+ age range, the need for development of supportive services for older adults wishing to remain in their homes has never been more timely.

NNORC services include information and referral, case management and assistance, opportunities for volunteer activities among older residents, shopping assistance and friendly visiting, health screenings, and exercise programs, and outreach to all residents in the NNORC geographic area.

The NNORC area is a southwest section of Albany that has one of the highest concentrations of older adults in the Capital Region. According to the most recent US census, in this area of Albany, 27 percent of the residents are over the age of 60 and 47 percent of the households have at least one resident 65 years of age or older. The boundaries of the area are Academy Road/Marwill Street on the east, Whitehall Road on the south, New Scotland Avenue on the north, and the western border at the intersection of New Scotland Avenue and Whitehall Road.

Many of the residents of the single- and two-family homes and garden apartments in this approximately 2 square mile region have lived in this area for many years. Residents aged 60 and above are eligible to participate in the NNORC project

The following free programs are sponsored by the NNORC and are open to the public.
